What is a French drain?
A French drain is a sloped trench with a perforated pipe in a bed of gravel, wrapped in filter fabric. Water soaks into the gravel, enters the pipe and flows by gravity to an outlet away from the house.
Do I need a French drain or just better gutters?
Sometimes gutters, downspout extensions and grading are enough, and we will say so. A French drain is the answer when water still collects against the foundation or in the yard after those basics are fixed.
Can a French drain be installed inside a crawl space?
Yes. An interior drain line around the inside of the foundation can collect water in the crawl space and carry it to a sump pump basin, which then pumps it out.
Will a French drain work in clay soil?
Yes, when it is built correctly. In clay, the gravel bed, fabric wrap and proper slope matter even more, because the surrounding soil drains so slowly.
How long does a French drain last?
A properly built French drain with filter fabric can work for many years. The fabric keeps silt out of the gravel and pipe, which is what usually causes drains to fail.
